Handmade personalised gifts from UK makers: hand-stamped necklaces, hand-painted plates, slate signs and pet portraits, plus tips on wording and lead times.
Made by hand, made for them
A printed name on a mug is personalised. A name stamped letter by letter into a silver ring, or a dog drawn in pencil from your own photo, is something else.
This guide covers personalised gifts that are genuinely made by hand, mostly by small UK makers who stamp, paint, stitch or carve each order themselves. We explain how to get the wording right, what your rights are if something goes wrong, and which makers we would trust for jewellery, the home, babies, pets and couples.

How to order a personalised gift without mistakes
Most problems with personalised gifts come down to spelling and timing, not craftsmanship. Two things are worth knowing before you order.
You usually cannot return it for a change of mind. The Consumer Contracts Regulations exclude goods "made to the consumer's specifications or clearly personalised" from the normal 14-day right to cancel an online order (legislation.gov.uk). If the maker spells a name wrong or the item arrives damaged, your normal rights still apply. If you typed it wrong, they do not.
Handmade takes time. A maker stamping or painting each order by hand may need a few days to a couple of weeks before posting, and longer from mid-November. Check the dispatch time in the listing, not just the delivery estimate.
Five steps to the perfect personalised gift
- Write the wording out first
Type names and dates in a note before you start the order, then copy and paste them into the personalisation box.
- Check spelling with someone else
Unusual names and nicknames are where most errors happen. A second pair of eyes catches them.
- Keep it short
Hand stamping and hand painting look best with fewer characters. Initials and a date often look better than a full sentence.
- Use one date format
Decide between 12.06.2026 and 12 June 2026, and say which in the notes so the maker does not guess.
- Ask for a proof if it is offered
Many makers will send a photo or mock-up before they start. Reply quickly so your order is not delayed.
Personalised jewellery
Hand-stamped jewellery is made one letter at a time, with a steel punch and a hammer, so the letters sit slightly unevenly. That is the sign of genuine handwork, not a fault. Laser-engraved pieces look neater but are made by machine.
Check the metal. Aluminium and sterling silver are both good for sensitive skin. If a piece is sold as silver and weighs 7.78 g or more, UK law requires it to be hallmarked, with a sponsor mark identifying who made or submitted it (The Assay Office). Most small pendants and rings fall below that weight.

Spotty Pig Gifts in Eastleigh stamps each name by hand around a tree of life charm, so it suits a mum, a grandmother or anyone who wants their family close. The aluminium is lightweight, non-tarnish and less likely to cause skin reactions than plated metals. The seller has over 7,000 reviews with 100% positive feedback.

Personalised gifts for the home

House signs are among the longest-lasting personalised gifts. Natural slate is close to indestructible outdoors and takes engraved lettering well. Hand-painted wooden signs suit a porch, a shed or a summerhouse, and should be sealed or brought inside in harsh winters to keep the paint fresh.

Personalised gifts for the home
Hand-painted ceramics and glass
Hand-painted personalised tableware makes a gift that gets used rather than put away. The painting is done with ceramic or glass paints and then baked to fix it. Always follow the maker's care notes: some pieces are dishwasher safe, while hand-painted glass usually lasts longer washed by hand.

Painted by hand, made to order
Personalised baby and children's gifts
Babies get a lot of gifts, but few are kept. Embroidered and hand-painted keepsakes with the baby's name and date of birth are the ones that end up in memory boxes. For more ideas, see our guide to handmade baby gifts.

Gifts for babies and little ones
Personalised gifts for pet lovers
Pet portraits drawn or painted from a photo are one of the most loved personalised gifts, especially as a memorial. Send the clearest photo you have, taken in daylight at the pet's eye level.
A hand-stamped tag is a practical gift too. In public places in Great Britain, a dog must wear a collar with the owner's name and address on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it (The Control of Dogs Order 1992). A brass tag stamped by hand covers that and looks far better than a machine-cut one.

Personalised for Christmas
Personalised gifts for him
Men tend to value personalised gifts they can use. A personalised tool roll for a woodworker or an engraved keyring both fit that rule. See also our guide to handmade gifts for dad.

Personalised gifts he will use
Make a personalised gift yourself
If you would rather make something, a kit built around your own photo or a date that matters is a good halfway house. Turn a family photo into sparkling crystal art over a few evenings, or fill in a star map for the night you met.

Kits for a personal touch
How to spot a genuinely handmade personalised gift
Hand stamped, hand painted, hand embroidered and hand drawn all mean a person did the personalisation.
Stamped letters sit slightly unevenly and painted lines vary. That is the point.
A real person or studio behind the listing is the best sign of handmade work.
Handmade personalisation takes longer than printing.
How we picked these gifts
We searched Amazon Handmade, eBay and our partner shops for personalised gifts and cut several hundred listings down to the picks on this page using four rules.
-
Personalised by hand
We favoured gifts that are stamped, painted, stitched or drawn by hand. Where personalisation is engraved or laser cut, the item itself is handmade or made to order.
-
Named makers
We picked makers who say who they are and where they work, from Hampshire stampers to Devon ceramic painters.
-
Trusted eBay sellers only
On eBay we only included new, fixed-price listings from UK sellers with at least 98% positive feedback.
-
A spread of budgets
Picks run from a wooden bauble under £10 to framed pet portraits and silver jewellery.

Personalised gift questions
What is a good handmade personalised gift?
A hand-stamped name necklace or a pencil portrait of a pet drawn from your photo are both popular. For a couple, a custom wooden map of a meaningful city works well.
Can I return a personalised gift?
Not for a change of mind. Personalised goods are excluded from the 14-day cancellation right for online orders. You are still covered if the item is faulty or not made as you ordered.
How long do personalised handmade gifts take?
Most makers need a few days to two weeks before posting. Allow longer from mid-November, when many small makers are at full capacity.
What is the difference between hand stamped and engraved?
Hand stamping uses a steel letter punch and a hammer, one letter at a time, so each piece varies slightly. Engraving is usually done by laser or machine and gives a neater, uniform finish.
What should a personalised dog tag say?
In Great Britain, a dog in a public place must wear a collar showing the owner’s name and address, either on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it. Many owners add a phone number as well.
Is hand-stamped aluminium jewellery good for sensitive skin?
Aluminium is lightweight, does not tarnish and is less likely to cause skin reactions than many plated metals. Sterling silver is another good choice.
What are good personalised gifts for a new baby?
Embroidered pram charms and handmade glass first Christmas baubles are keepsakes families tend to hold on to.
Our recommendation
- Best overall: hand-stamped family tree necklace
- Best for pet lovers: hand-drawn pencil pet portrait
- Best for the home: natural slate house sign
- Best on a budget: personalised jigsaw keyrings
For most people, a hand-stamped family tree necklace is the safest handmade personalised gift: affordable, made by hand by a well-reviewed UK maker and suitable for sensitive skin. For a pet owner, a pencil portrait drawn from your own photo will be hard to beat.
