Handmade gifts for kids from UK makers: UKCA-marked wooden toys, crochet soft toys, name puzzles and craft kits, sorted by age, with toy safety tips.

UK gift guide, updated October 2026

Handmade gifts children will actually play with

A good handmade toy outlasts the plastic craze of the month. Solid oak and soft cotton survive years of play and often get handed down to younger brothers and sisters.

Buying handmade for children comes with one extra job: checking that a toy is safe and properly marked. We explain what to look for, then share our picks by age and interest, from wooden toys and crochet animals to bedroom keepsakes, craft kits and gifts for curious outdoor kids. Most come from named UK makers, and every toy we recommend says it is UKCA or CE tested.

What to check before you buy

Is a handmade toy safe?

Handmade does not mean exempt. Government guidance on the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 says the rules apply to anyone selling toys as a commercial activity, and a regular seller on an online marketplace is unlikely to be exempt (GOV.UK). In practice that means a maker selling toys should:

  • mark the toy with either the UKCA or the CE mark
  • put their name and contact address on the toy, or on the packaging if the toy is too small

Any warnings must be clear and start with the word "Warning". Check the listing before you buy. Every toy we recommend below states that it is UKCA or CE tested or marked. If a soft toy or wooden toy says nothing about safety testing, ask the maker or choose another.

Match the toy to the child's age. Children under five often put things in their mouths, and small toys are a known choking hazard (nidirect). Soft toys with plastic safety eyes are usually marked as unsuitable for under-threes, so for a baby or toddler choose embroidered eyes. Keep toys meant for older children away from younger brothers and sisters.

Bedroom gifts are different. A height chart, a toy box or a door plaque is not a toy, so it does not need a toy safety mark. It should still be smooth and sturdy, with a child-safe paint or varnish.

Solid oak and beech

Wooden toys

Solid wooden toys are heavy enough to feel special and tough enough to survive being thrown. Hardwoods such as oak and beech resist dents better than softwoods like pine. Natural oil or beeswax finishes let the grain show; painted toys should state that the paint is child safe.

Several of our picks come from a small workshop in Bude, Cornwall, that shapes characters from solid hardwood and tests each design to UKCA and CE standards. The age is printed on every listing.

Crochet animals with safety marks

Soft toys and cuddly friends

Crochet soft toys, often called amigurumi, are worked in tight stitches so the stuffing stays inside. Look for embroidered eyes rather than plastic ones for babies and toddlers, and check the yarn: cotton and acrylic baby yarns wash well and stay soft.

Height charts and toy boxes

For their bedroom

Bedroom gifts are a good choice from grandparents and godparents because they last well beyond childhood. A wooden height chart in particular becomes a family record. Personalised pieces are made to order, and the usual 14-day right to cancel an online order does not apply to goods made to your specification (legislation.gov.uk), so check the spelling of names before you order.

Painting kits and crystal art

For kids who love making things

A craft kit is a gift of an afternoon as well as an object. Choose one matched to their patience: painting kits suit younger children, while latch hook and crystal art reward an older child who enjoys following a pattern. These kits are not handmade, but the finished piece will be.

Craft kits and creative gifts

Bug hotels and puzzle boxes

For curious and outdoor kids

A bug hotel or nest box gives children a reason to go outside and a lesson in patience. Put a bug hotel in a sunny, sheltered spot at about waist height, and a nest box out of direct midday sun. Older children who like a challenge will enjoy a hand-carved puzzle box with a secret opening.

Buyer's tips

How to choose a handmade gift for a child

01
Check the safety marking

Toys sold by makers must meet UK toy safety rules.

Look for
UKCA or CE stated in the listing, and the maker's name and address on the toy or packaging.
Avoid
Soft toys or wooden toys with no mention of testing.
02
Match the age

Small parts and plastic eyes are a risk for young children.

Look for
A stated age on the listing, and embroidered eyes for under-threes.
Avoid
Toys for older children in a house with a baby.
03
Choose durable materials

Children test toys hard.

Look for
Solid hardwood, natural oil finishes, washable yarn and child-safe paint.
Avoid
Thin plywood and glued-on decorations.
04
Order personalised gifts early

Name puzzles and toy boxes are made to order.

Look for
A stated making time.
Avoid
Ordering in the last week before a birthday or Christmas.
How we chose

How we picked these gifts

We searched eBay, Amazon Handmade and our partner shops for handmade children’s gifts and cut several hundred listings down using four rules.

  • Toys must state safety testing

Every toy we recommend says it is UKCA or CE tested, marked or approved. We left out dozens of lovely soft toys that said nothing about safety.

  • Made by hand

Toys and keepsakes are shaped, crocheted, painted or built by hand. Where something is a craft kit, we say so.

  • Trusted eBay sellers only

On eBay we only included new, fixed-price listings from UK-based sellers with at least 98% positive feedback.

  • A spread of ages and budgets

Picks run from a crystal art card under £5 to a hand-painted personalised toy box.

FAQs

Handmade gifts for kids: your questions

Do handmade toys need a CE or UKCA mark?

Yes, if they are sold as part of a business. UK guidance says anyone selling toys as a commercial activity must follow the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. That includes a UKCA or CE mark and the maker’s name and address.

Are crochet toys safe for babies?

They can be, if the maker states they are tested and marked, and the eyes are embroidered rather than plastic. Toys with plastic safety eyes are usually labelled as not suitable for children under three.

What is a good handmade gift for a 3 year old?

A chunky solid wooden toy, such as a beech character or wooden play food, or a personalised name puzzle. Both are tough and help with hand skills.

What is a good handmade gift for a 10 year old?

Something with a challenge or a project, such as a hand-carved puzzle box or a latch hook kit.

What handmade gifts last beyond childhood?

A solid oak height chart or a hand-painted toy box can be kept for decades and passed down.

Can I return a personalised gift for a child?

Usually not for a change of mind. The 14-day right to cancel online orders does not cover goods made to your specification. You are still protected if the item is faulty or wrong.

Conclusion

Our recommendation

  • Best overall: Dinosaur Ned oak robot toy
  • Best personalised: wooden name puzzle
  • Best under £10: crochet chicken soft toy
  • Best keepsake: personalised oak height chart

For most children under five, a solid wooden character from the Bude workshop, such as Dinosaur Ned in oak, is our pick. It is made by hand from solid oak and is UKCA and CE tested. For older children, a craft kit or a bug hotel gives them something to do as well as something to keep.
